# Referral ask scripts

> A client just hit a real result and it's a good moment to ask if they know anyone else who could use your help.

The best time to ask for a referral is right after a client has felt a result, not months later during a random check-in. Their enthusiasm is highest in that window, and it's the moment the ask feels natural instead of transactional.

A vague 'know anyone who needs a coach?' rarely produces anything, because it asks the client to do all the thinking. Naming a specific person or type of person does most of that work for them.

Referral asks should stay easy to decline. The moment it feels obligatory, clients either go quiet or send someone unqualified just to close the loop -- neither helps you.

## The scripts

### 1. Moment-of-win ask

```
so proud of you for [specific result] -- this is exactly why I love this work. random thought: anyone in your circle dealing with something similar who'd want to talk?
```

Why it works: Ties the ask directly to a real, recent win instead of arriving out of nowhere.

### 2. Specific-person ask

```
this might be a stretch, but does anyone in [your gym/community] ever talk about wanting [outcome]? happy to just be a resource for them, no pressure.
```

Why it works: A named filter is easier to answer than an open-ended one -- the client doesn't have to invent a name from nothing.

### 3. Two-way intro offer

```
if it's ever useful, happy to jump on a quick call with anyone you think could benefit -- or just send them my way, whatever's easier for you.
```

Why it works: Offers the client a choice of effort level, so the ask fits whether they're comfortable making a warm intro or just a link.

### 4. Low-pressure standing ask

```
no need to think of anyone right now, but if it ever comes up -- I'm always happy to take referrals from people like you.
```

Why it works: Plants the idea without requiring an answer on the spot, so it can surface naturally whenever a real opportunity comes up.

## FAQ

### When's the best time to ask for a referral?

Right after a client mentions or notices a real result -- a comment, a screenshot, a proud update. That's when their goodwill toward you is highest.

### What if a client sends someone who isn't a good fit?

Take the call anyway and be honest if it's not a match. Handling a bad-fit referral graciously is what keeps that client comfortable sending the next one.
