# Comment-to-DM conversion scripts

> Someone left a real comment on your post and it's time to move the conversation somewhere useful.

Public and permanent -- that's what separates a comment from a DM. Two things follow from that: everyone else reading is watching how you respond, and the commenter probably won't say more there than they're comfortable with strangers seeing. That's what the DM is for.

The common mistake is answering fully in the comments and never following up in DM -- the commenter gets their answer but no relationship gets built. The opposite mistake is ignoring the comment on the post and only DMing, which can look like you didn't read what they wrote.

Reply briefly and genuinely in the comments first, then follow with a DM that goes deeper. That two-step signals you actually read what they said.

## The scripts

### 1. The move-to-DM invite

```
just replied on your comment but wanted to go a bit deeper here -- you mentioned [specific thing], want me to break down how that usually plays out?
```

Why it works: References the exact comment content, so it doesn't read as an automated response.

### 2. Answer it properly in private

```
saw your comment about [topic] -- didn't want to write an essay in public but happy to actually walk you through it here if you want.
```

Why it works: Without an audience watching, the commenter can ask the fuller question they were holding back in the comments.

### 3. Everyone asks this

```
you're like the fifth person to ask this exact thing this week, so I actually put together something on it -- want me to send it over?
```

Why it works: Signals the question is common and worth a real answer, without making the lead feel like a burden.

### 4. Qualifying the reply

```
good question -- quick one for you: is this something you're dealing with right now, or more just curious for later?
```

Why it works: Separates someone with an active problem from someone browsing, which changes how you should respond next.

## FAQ

### Should I comment publicly before DMing?

Yes, even a short reply. It shows other people scrolling the post that you engage, and it tells the commenter their comment landed before your DM shows up.

### What if the comment is just an emoji, not a real question?

That belongs in the story-reply-openers scripts instead -- this set is for comments that show actual intent, like a specific question or objection.
