---# SetSmart vs ManyChat vs Luca: Which Should Coaches Use?

> In the SetSmart vs ManyChat decision, SetSmart is an AI appointment setter billed by AI messages ($25-$797/mo), while ManyChat is a chat-marketing flow builder billed by active contacts ($0-$139/mo). Luca is the third option: an AI DM setter ($99-$499/mo) that drafts replies in your voice and holds them in a human review queue by default.

## Key takeaways

- SetSmart is an AI appointment setter, $25-$797/mo billed by AI messages, across Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.
- ManyChat is a chat-marketing flow builder, free to $139/mo billed by active contacts, across seven channels including TikTok, SMS, and email.
- Luca is an AI DM setter, $99-$499/mo flat, that drafts in your voice with a human review queue on by default.
- Volume flips the answer. At 1,200 sales conversations a month, SetSmart's published rates model to roughly $647 and ManyChat to $29.
- Pick a setter if your goal is booked calls from real conversations. Pick ManyChat if your goal is flows, comment-to-DM, and broadcasts.

Most coaches land on the SetSmart vs ManyChat question after their inbox starts leaking money. A rush of DMs comes in, you reply late, the hot lead ghosts. SetSmart is an AI setter that qualifies leads and books calls. ManyChat is a chat-marketing engine built around keyword triggers and automated flows. The sticker prices tell you almost nothing, because the two meter different things. Below, we price all three at four monthly volumes, compare 16 capabilities, and cover what happens when you try to move your leads from one to the other.

## How we evaluated (and who we are)

We're Luca, and we sell one of the three tools on this page. Read every sentence about Luca as a vendor describing its own product, and verify the competitor claims yourself before you spend money.

Every SetSmart and ManyChat figure came from each company's own pricing and product pages on 2026-08-13, not from a review site. Where a feature shows up only in marketing copy, we write "per its site" rather than stating it as fact. We didn't run paid accounts on all three side by side, so nothing here is a speed or performance test, and you won't find a conversion-rate claim on this page.

We judged four things: what the tool costs at *your* volume rather than at its cheapest tier, what it does to the way you sound, what happens when it breaks, and what it costs to leave. Where a rival wins, we say so. ManyChat is cheaper than Luca at every volume we modelled, and the gap is not close.

## SetSmart vs ManyChat: how do they compare at a glance?

Two of these three are built to hold a sales conversation, and one is built to run marketing automations. Figures are from each company's pricing page, retrieved 2026-08-13.

## SetSmart or ManyChat: which costs less at your volume?

The headline numbers mislead you, because the meters count different things. ManyChat charges by active contacts. SetSmart charges by AI messages sent. Luca charges a flat rate per tier. A cheap entry price can still produce the biggest bill once your inbox gets busy.

**Chart:** Horizontal bars. ManyChat: Essential $14, Pro $29, Business $69. SetSmart: Light $25, Pro $97, Scale $297. Luca: Starter $99, Pro $249, Scale $499. (Horizontal bars. ManyChat: Essential $14, Pro $29, Business $69. SetSmart: Light $25, Pro $97, Scale $297. Luca: Starter $99, Pro $249, Scale $499. See Sources.)

Here are the same three tools modelled at four monthly volumes. We assume seven AI messages per sales conversation, which is what a short qualify-and-book exchange looks like. That assumption is ours, and it's the one number here you should adjust to your own inbox. Every rate underneath it is published.

| Sales conversations/mo | \~AI messages | SetSmart | ManyChat | Luca |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 100 | \~700 | Pro $97 (Light's 250-msg cap is hard) | Pro $29 | Starter $99 |
| 400 | \~2,800 | $297 (Scale, or Pro + 2 top-ups, same price) | Pro $29 | Pro $249 |
| 1,200 | \~8,400 | $647 (Scale + 5 top-ups at $70) | Pro $29 | Pro $249 |
| 3,000 | \~21,000 | $1,037 (Enterprise + 6 top-ups at $40) | $54 (Pro + 500 contacts at $0.05) | Scale $499 |

SetSmart's curve is the steepest here, because message billing charges you for the exact thing you want more of: long conversations with real buyers. ManyChat's is nearly flat, because 2,500 active contacts is a lot of contacts and its overage rate -- the price of each contact past your plan's limit -- drops sharply as you climb. If the invoice is all you care about, ManyChat wins every row.

What each dollar buys pulls the other way. ManyChat's $29 covers a flow engine that answers inside a template. SetSmart's $647 covers an AI that walks a lead through your qualifying questions to a booked call. Those aren't the same purchase, and pretending they are is how coaches end up with cheap software that never books anything.

## ManyChat vs SetSmart: which channels do you get, and how long is setup?

On the ManyChat vs SetSmart channel question, ManyChat covers far more ground: Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, and email per its site, though cheaper plans limit you to two or three of them. SetSmart covers three on every tier including the $25 one, and Telegram isn't among them. If TikTok or email broadcasts are core to your funnel, ManyChat is the only one of the two that reaches them.

Setup runs the other way. ManyChat's power comes from building flows, and flows take time to map, test, and keep working. That's fine if you enjoy the builder. It's a tax if you just want leads answered. SetSmart asks you for your qualifying questions and a calendar, then starts setting. Whichever one you'll actually have running by Friday is worth more than the one you'll finish building in March.

## How do the three compare on safety and API compliance?

All three use official Meta APIs, and both SetSmart and ManyChat list Meta Business Partner status on their sites. That status matters less than coaches assume. Meta's Messenger Platform and Instagram Messaging API policy gives businesses up to 24 hours to respond after a user's last interaction, and the Human Agent tag extends that to 7 days for messages a person sends by hand. Automated messages aren't permitted in that extended window, and partner status changes neither rule.

SetSmart's site states there is "no risk at all" of an Instagram ban because it uses official APIs. Read that carefully. Official API access protects you from the *method* being flagged. It doesn't protect you from behavior: machine pace, identical text across dozens of threads, or messaging anyone who didn't message you first. Those are account-level signals, and they get accounts restricted whether the traffic came through an approved API or not.

If a lead asks whether they're talking to a bot, the answer is yes, on any of these tools, and you say so. People expect that now: 95% want an explanation when a decision was made by AI (Zendesk CX Trends, 11,000+ respondents). A review queue makes the answer easier to give, because a person really did read the message before it went out.

Our guide on whether [Instagram DM automation is safe](/blog/is-instagram-dm-automation-safe) covers pacing, and [is ManyChat safe](/blog/is-manychat-safe) looks at what can go wrong with a flow builder.

## Where does Luca fit for coaches closing in the DMs?

Luca is the pick when your sales happen inside real DM conversations and the reply has to sound like you. It drafts every response in your voice, then holds it in a human review queue so you approve, tweak, or send with one tap. For a coach doing $2k to $200k a month, that setting matters more than it looks: your voice is the product, and a qualifying question that lands wrong costs you the sale. Our [AI setter for coaches](/ai-setter) guide covers the category end to end.

### An illustrative DM (labeled: anonymized example)

> **Lead:** Hey, saw your post on cutting without losing strength. Do you take on new clients?**Luca draft (in the review queue):** Yeah, I've got a couple spots open this month. Quick q so I don't waste your time -- are you training now, or starting from scratch? And what's your main goal, fat loss or strength?*The coach glances at the draft, changes "a couple" to "two," and sends. The lead replies in under a minute.*

The point is to catch the hot lead quickly with your own wording still going out.

## A worked example: Priya, strength coach, 380 DMs a month

Priya coaches lifters online out of Manchester. She sells a 12-week program at $1,400, gets around 380 inbound sales conversations in a normal month and roughly 900 in a launch month, and works mainly on Instagram. She was on ManyChat's free plan, auto-delivering a lead magnet when someone commented "PROGRAM" on a Reel. The flow sent the PDF, the lead replied with a real question, and the thread sat unanswered until she opened Instagram that evening.

Modelled at her volume: SetSmart lands on Scale at $297 in a normal month and $507 in a launch month, once 900 conversations push her past 4,000 messages and she buys three top-ups. ManyChat stays at $29 in both, because 900 active contacts fits inside Pro's 2,500. Luca sits at $249 in both, because 900 conversations fits inside Pro's 1,500.

Against a $1,400 program price she picked neither-and-both. ManyChat Pro at $29 keeps doing comment-to-DM lead magnet delivery. A setter picks up the moment the lead asks something a PDF can't answer. Her combined bill is $278 a month, a fifth of one sale.

The line that changed was the handoff. The flow used to end with "Here's your guide, enjoy!" It now ends with a question: *"Sent it over. Out of curiosity, are you lifting now or coming back from a break?"* A flow that ends in a question hands the setter something to work with. One that ends in a period hands it nothing.

## Pros, cons: who is each tool actually for?

### SetSmart

**Best for:** coaches who want a hands-off AI setter on Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, and who are comfortable with auto-send.

Pros: built for one job, so there's little to set up beyond your questions and a calendar. Books into Calendly, Cal.com, iClosed, and GoHighLevel per its site. Voice notes and image reading on every tier. Zapier, Make, and a REST API -- a way for other software to talk to it -- are all published. The $25 tier is the cheapest real way into the AI-setter category.

Cons: message billing gives it the steepest cost curve of the three, and the Light plan's 250-message cap is hard, with no top-ups. Three channels, no Telegram. Auto-send by default means a badly worded qualifying question reaches the lead before you see it. The "no risk at all" ban claim says more than an official API can back up. Our full [SetSmart review](/blog/setsmart-review) walks the setup and the message meter tier by tier.

### ManyChat

**Best for:** coaches and creators running comment-to-DM funnels, lead magnets, and broadcasts across many channels on a small budget.

Pros: cheapest at every volume we modelled, by a wide margin. Seven channels. An old, well-built flow editor with a huge library of templates, and the best comment-to-DM tooling of the three. A usable free plan at 25 contacts, so you can test the idea before paying. Live Chat inbox for taking over by hand, with the Human Agent tag applied for you on anything you send from it.

Cons: it's marketing software, so a real sales conversation has to be forced into flow logic, and building and looking after flows never really stops. AI conversations need the $29 Pro tier at minimum. Channel access is locked to your plan, so "seven channels" means two on Essential. Nothing in it is built to sound like one particular person.

### Luca

**Best for:** coaches whose voice is the thing that sets them apart, and who close in the DMs rather than on a call.

Pros: every reply is drafted in your voice and held in a review queue, so auto-send is a choice you make rather than a default you inherit. Flat pricing, so a launch week doesn't produce a surprise invoice. Four channels including Telegram on Pro. Multi-day rescue cadences for leads who go quiet. See [Luca's pricing](/pricing) for tiers.

Cons: the most expensive entry point of the three at $99, with no free plan. Fewer channels than ManyChat, and no TikTok, SMS, or email. No visual flow builder and no broadcasts, so it can't run the top-of-funnel mechanics ManyChat is built for. Zapier and public API access aren't published today. The review queue costs you a few seconds per lead, which is a real cost if you wanted autopilot.

## Which edge cases are worth planning for?

**The lead replies at 2am from another timezone.** Meta's 24-hour window starts at the lead's last interaction, not at your working hours, so a 2am message gives you until 2am the next day. Auto-send answers instantly. A review queue means you answer at 7am, still inside the window, but five hours of enthusiasm have gone. If most of your audience is on the other side of the world, that argues for auto-send on a narrow set of opening questions.

**The lead resurfaces on day five.** Once 24 hours pass, automated messages are no longer allowed. You have up to 7 days under the Human Agent tag, and only for messages a person sends by hand. In ManyChat that means sending from Live Chat rather than a flow. Past 7 days none of these tools can reopen the thread, and follow-up has to come from email, a story, or another channel.

**The person messaging you is already a client.** All three will happily pitch a paying client the thing they already bought. Tag existing clients on day one and exclude them from qualification triggers.

**Launch week triples your volume.** A contact-metered tool absorbs the spike. A message-metered tool bills it, and a hard-capped tier stops answering mid-conversation. If you run launches, check what your tool does at the cap, not only what it costs at your average.

## Troubleshooting: symptom, cause, fix

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AI wrote a reply but the lead never received it | The 24-hour standard messaging window closed | Resend by hand from the inbox so the Human Agent tag applies; it's valid for 7 days from the lead's last message |
| Bill jumped but bookings didn't | Message-metered billing counting support chatter, or contacts reactivating | Route FAQ and existing-client traffic away from the AI trigger; on SetSmart, compare a higher tier against top-up rates |
| Replies read like a brochure | Qualification script written as marketing copy, not as speech | Feed the tool real DMs you've sent that closed, and cut every sentence you wouldn't say out loud |
| Instagram flags "suspected automated behavior" | Burst sending, identical text across threads, or a cold account | Slow the pace, vary openers, and warm the account before scaling volume |
| Comment-to-DM fires, then the thread dies | The flow ends on a statement with nothing to hand off | End the flow on a question, and connect a setter or inbox alert to the reply |
| Calls get booked but no-shows climb | Booking before qualifying, so unready leads take slots | Add a budget or timeline question before the calendar link appears |

Pacing and warm-up are account-level problems no tool fixes for you. Our post on [Instagram account warm-up](/blog/instagram-account-warm-up) covers the first two weeks.

## What mistakes do coaches make with this decision?

**Comparing sticker prices.** The two entry tiers buy different things on different meters, so the cheaper number tells you nothing. Model your own volume first, using the table above.

**Buying a flow builder to hold a sales conversation.** ManyChat is excellent at what it does. A qualification chat with a $1,400 buyer branches in ways a flow can't anticipate, and the lead notices.

**Turning auto-send on in week one.** You don't yet know how the tool handles a price objection or an odd question about your program. Watch a few dozen drafts, then decide which categories you trust.

**Letting the AI answer the price question.** How you price is part of how you sell. Route price to yourself until you've seen the tool handle it your way. Our post on [the price conversation in DMs](/blog/the-price-conversation-in-dms) covers the framing.

**Running two tools on one account without splitting triggers.** Only one app should own a given trigger. Two tools listening to the same inbox produce double replies, which looks like the automated behavior Instagram flags.

**Waiting until you're leaving to export anything.** Tags and custom fields are portable. Conversation history mostly isn't. Export monthly, while everything still works.

## Which one should you choose?

**Choose ManyChat** if your bottleneck is top-of-funnel volume: comment-to-DM, lead magnets, list growth, broadcasts, or channels beyond Meta's. Choose it also if price is the binding constraint. At 1,200 conversations a month it costs less than a tenth of either setter.

**Choose SetSmart** if your bottleneck is that nobody answers your DMs and you want that solved without your involvement. You're on Instagram, WhatsApp, or Messenger, your volume is under about 400 conversations a month so message billing stays sane, and you're comfortable with auto-send.

**Choose Luca** if replies have to sound like you, your average client is worth four figures, and a wrong-toned message costs more than a slow one. Flat tiers also suit a business whose volume swings.

**Run two** if your funnel has a top and a middle, which most coaching funnels do. ManyChat Pro at $29 for comment-to-DM delivery plus a setter for the sales conversation is a real configuration, and often the cheapest sensible one. Split the triggers so only one tool answers any given message.

If SetSmart is on your shortlist, we go deeper in our [SetSmart alternative](/blog/best-setsmart-alternative-for-coaches) breakdown. For the other direction, see [ManyChat alternatives for coaches](/blog/manychat-alternative-for-coaches).

## Migrating between them: what moves and what doesn't?

Plan a switch as three jobs: export, rebuild, cutover.

**Export first, while your account still works.** ManyChat exports contact data to CSV with custom and system fields included. Tags export as true/false columns, so a contact tagged "booked-call" arrives as a boolean rather than a date. If you export via the Google Sheets integration, ManyChat's own docs cap you at 250 requests per 100 seconds, so batch large audiences or you'll lose rows silently. Export before you cancel, not after.

**Expect to rebuild, not import.** Flows, keyword triggers, and sequences don't transfer between vendors in any format, and neither does conversation history in most cases. Rebuild the three or four flows that actually earn money and leave the rest. Most coaches find half their flows haven't fired in months.

**Cut over on a quiet week.** Only one app at a time can own the messaging webhook for an Instagram or Facebook page -- the connection Meta uses to push new messages to a tool. So you disconnect the old tool before the new one receives anything, and that means a gap. Do it Monday morning rather than mid-launch, watch the inbox by hand for a day, and keep the old account readable for a month.

**What quietly doesn't transfer:** opt-in status as the old platform recorded it, each lead's position inside a follow-up sequence, and the clock on every open 24-hour window. Leads mid-sequence need one manual message to restart. Budget an afternoon.

## When does neither one fit?

Sometimes the honest answer is that this is the wrong shortlist.

**Your volume is under roughly 30 DMs a month.** No tool earns its keep. Saved replies, notifications on, and a habit of checking Instagram three times a day will beat $99 of software. Come back when the inbox hurts.

**Your leads are mostly on WhatsApp or SMS.** Setter AI and similar WhatsApp-leaning tools are built for that shape, and neither SetSmart nor Luca is. Our [Setter AI review](/blog/setter-ai-review) covers the trade-offs.

**You need a person, not a setter.** If your sale needs someone who can read a room, work out a payment plan, and follow up by voice, hire a human. A good setter still beats all three of these on offers people think hard about before buying. See [how much an appointment setter costs](/blog/how-much-does-an-appointment-setter-cost) first.

**You already run everything in GoHighLevel or a full CRM.** Adding a fourth tool to a setup that already handles messaging can cost you more in scattered data than it gives back in speed. Check what you already own.

## One honest limit

Luca isn't the cheapest way to start, and it doesn't reach the most channels. ManyChat's free plan and $14 entry tier undercut it, and at 1,200 conversations a month the modelled gap is $249 against $29. ManyChat also covers TikTok, SMS, and email, which Luca doesn't today, plus a visual flow builder and broadcasts that Luca has no equivalent for. If your priority is the lowest bill or top-of-funnel automation at scale, ManyChat is the more direct fit, and we'd tell you the same on a call.

The second limit is the review queue we think is the point. It costs a few seconds per lead, and it makes Luca a worse choice than SetSmart for a coach who genuinely wants to stop touching the inbox. Luca is built for a narrower job, closing coaching clients inside DM conversations, and priced for the revenue that job produces. If that's not your job, buy the other thing.

Whatever you choose, run it inside the platform rules and keep a human on anything that touches money.

## FAQ

### Is SetSmart or ManyChat better for coaches?

It depends on the job. SetSmart is better if you want an AI setter that qualifies leads and books calls from real conversations. ManyChat is better if you want automated flows, broadcasts, and comment-to-DM funnels across seven channels. ManyChat also costs less at every volume we modelled, including $29 at 1,200 conversations a month.

### How is Luca different from SetSmart and ManyChat?

Luca drafts replies in your voice and holds them in a human review queue by default, so auto-send stays off until you enable it. SetSmart and ManyChat send automatically. Luca bills flat per tier ($99-$499/mo) rather than by messages or contacts, across Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Messenger.

### Which is cheapest, SetSmart or ManyChat?

ManyChat, at every volume. Its free plan covers 25 contacts and its cheapest AI tier is $29/mo for 2,500 active contacts. SetSmart starts at $25/mo for 250 AI messages with a hard cap. Modelled at 1,200 sales conversations a month, SetSmart lands near $647 and ManyChat stays at $29.

### What does SetSmart actually cost at higher volume?

More than the sticker price suggests, because it bills AI messages. Scale is $297 for 4,000 messages, then $70 per additional 1,000. Enterprise is $797 for 15,000, then $40 per 1,000. At roughly 21,000 messages a month, that models to about $1,037.

### Does ManyChat book sales calls like SetSmart?

ManyChat can route leads and trigger booking links inside flows, and its Pro tier at $29/mo includes AI conversations. But it's built as chat-marketing software, not a dedicated appointment setter. SetSmart is purpose-built to qualify on goal, budget, and timeline, then book into Calendly, Cal.com, or GoHighLevel.

### Can I move my leads from ManyChat to another tool?

Partly. ManyChat exports contacts, custom fields, and system fields to CSV, with tags as true/false columns. Flows, keyword triggers, and conversation history don't transfer to any other vendor. If you export via Google Sheets, ManyChat caps you at 250 requests per 100 seconds, so batch large audiences.

### Can I use these tools without breaking Instagram's rules?

Yes, if you stay inside Meta's windows and never message people who didn't message you. Meta's policy gives you 24 hours to respond automatically, and 7 days for manually sent messages under the Human Agent tag. Disclose AI when asked; 95% of consumers expect an explanation for AI decisions, per Zendesk's 2026 research.
