---# ManyChat Review (2026): Honest Take from a Rival

> ManyChat is the best chat-marketing tool in its price range, and most coaches running comment-to-DM funnels should keep it. We rate it 3.9/5: excellent flows, seven channels, weak pricing predictability, and no real answer for unscripted sales conversations. Paid plans run $17 to $199/mo billed monthly, plus per-contact overage.

## Key takeaways

- ManyChat's Free plan allows 25 Active Contacts per month, 4 live automations, 2 channels, and adds a "Powered by Manychat" watermark on first contact (ManyChat Help, 2026).
- The prices on the pricing page ($14-$139/mo) are annual-billing rates. Month-to-month, the same plans cost $17, $39, $99, and $199.
- Billing follows monthly Active Contacts with per-contact overage, and ManyChat's Billing FAQ states payments can't be capped.
- ManyChat supports Telegram and TikTok, which older reviews miss. WhatsApp, SMS, and email start at Pro.
- Our verdict: 3.9/5. Buy it for capture and broadcasts. Don't expect it to carry a sales conversation.

Most ManyChat reviews are written by affiliates who earn a commission when you click their link. This one is written by a competitor, which is a different bias, and at least we'll name it up front. We build Luca, an AI DM setter that competes with ManyChat for part of the same budget.

So this ManyChat review is the one we'd want to read before buying: every price and limit checked against ManyChat's own pricing page and help centre in August 2026, credit given where ManyChat earns it, and criticism kept to things you can verify yourself. Where ManyChat is the right buy, we say so plainly.

## How did we evaluate ManyChat?

The disclosure first: **Luca is our product, and it competes with ManyChat.** We sell to coaches who close in the DMs, ManyChat sells to everyone who automates chat, and the overlap is real. Read this review knowing that, and check anything you doubt against the sources at the bottom.

The ground rules we held ourselves to:

**Every number comes from ManyChat's own pages, dated.** Pricing, plan limits, overage rates, and channel lists were read off manychat.com and help.manychat.com in August 2026. Nothing from affiliate round-ups, nothing from memory.

**The rating uses a stated rubric.** Five criteria, equal weight: flow builder and comment-to-DM, channel coverage, templates and ease of setup, pricing predictability, and sales-conversation depth. The scores are in the verdict section, so you can reweight them for your own priorities.

**We judge ManyChat on its own job first.** It's a chat-marketing tool. Scoring it as a sales tool and nothing else would be rigging the match, so we score both and keep them separate.

What we didn't do: run ManyChat on a production coaching account for three months. Feature notes come from ManyChat's published documentation, and we say so wherever the difference matters.

## What is ManyChat and who is it built for?

ManyChat is a chat-marketing automation platform. You build visual flows that respond to triggers, so when someone comments a keyword on your Reel, DMs you a trigger word, or replies to a story, ManyChat sends the message you scripted, delivers the lead magnet, tags the contact, and moves them down the path you drew.

It was built for creators and businesses doing this at volume: influencers running giveaways, e-commerce stores answering order questions, and coaches capturing leads at the top of a [DM sales funnel](/blog/dm-sales-funnel-for-coaches). The Advanced plan includes 25,000 Active Contacts a month, which tells you the scale ManyChat is engineered for. This is industrial plumbing for messages, priced from free to $199 a month.

The core distinction for a coach: ManyChat executes scripts you wrote in advance. It doesn't improvise. Whether that's a limitation or exactly what you want depends entirely on which part of your funnel you point it at.

## What does ManyChat genuinely do well?

Three things, and it does them better than almost anyone at the price.

### The flow builder and comment-to-DM triggers

The flow builder is the best in the category. It's visual, fast, and forgiving, with conditions, delays, tags, and branching that a non-technical coach can learn in an afternoon. Comment-to-DM, the feature most coaches actually buy it for, fires reliably: someone comments "GUIDE" on your post, and the DM with your link arrives seconds later. That trigger, run consistently, is a real lead machine, and it's the piece we'd tell most coaches to keep even if they change everything else about their stack. Our guide to [Instagram DM automation for coaches](/blog/instagram-dm-automation-for-coaches) covers where that trigger fits.

### Channel coverage most rivals can't match

ManyChat covers seven channels: Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, WhatsApp, SMS, and email. TikTok is a recent addition and a genuine differentiator, since almost no rival automates TikTok messages at all. Telegram works on every plan, including Free, through a bot you create with BotFather. WhatsApp, SMS, and email start at Pro. For a business that captures attention on three platforms, one tool covering all of them is worth real money.

### Templates, docs, and sheer maturity

ManyChat has been at this since 2015, and it shows in the right ways. There are more templates, tutorials, YouTube walkthroughs, and certified agency partners than for any competitor, so whatever you're stuck on, someone has already recorded the fix. The plan pages list integrations with CRM, email, SMS, and commerce tools, and an API on Pro and above. For reliability at high volume, capturing thousands of commenters in a launch week, it's proven in a way younger tools aren't.

## What does ManyChat cost in 2026?

Paid plans run $17 to $199 a month billed monthly, or $14 to $139 a month if you commit to a year. That gap matters, because the pricing page leads with the annual rates, and most coaches read them as the month-to-month price. Every figure below comes from ManyChat's pricing page and per-plan help articles, August 2026.

| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed annually | Active Contacts/mo | Overage (monthly billing) | Channels | Users |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | $0 | 25 | -- | 2 (Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, Telegram) | 1 |
| Essential | $17 | $14/mo | 250 | $0.10 per contact | 2 (same list) | 2 |
| Pro | $39 | $29/mo | 2,500 | $0.05 per contact | 3 (adds WhatsApp, SMS, email) | 3 |
| Business | $99 | $69/mo | 7,500 | $0.025 per contact | Unlimited | 5 |
| Advanced | $199 | $139/mo | 25,000 | $0.004 per contact | Unlimited | 10 |

Paid plans carry a 14-day trial. Annual billing also lowers the overage rates, extra Inbox seats cost $25 each, and the Free plan stamps "Powered by Manychat" on your first message to each contact.

**Chart:** ManyChat's month-to-month prices are $17, $39, $99, and $199, against annual-billing rates of $14, $29, $69, and $139 for the same plans. (Month-to-month vs annual-billing prices per plan. Source: Manychat pricing page and plan help articles, retrieved 2026-08-14.)

## How does Active Contact billing work?

You pay for people, not messages. ManyChat defines an Active Contact as a contact who interacted with you through ManyChat during your current billing month, whether through messages or automations. One person counts once per month no matter how many messages you trade, and the count resets each cycle.

The details that decide your bill: comments, story replies, DMs, broadcasts, and live-chat interactions all count someone as active. A person who comments your trigger keyword and never says another word bills the same as a lead who books a call. ManyChat sends alerts at 70%, 90%, and 100% of your allowance, and past the allowance the per-contact overage rates in the table above kick in.

There is no ceiling. ManyChat's own Billing FAQ says payments can't be capped, on the reasoning that your audience keeps growing. Fair or not, it means the months your content performs best are the months your bill surprises you, and you can't tell ManyChat to stop at a number.

## Where do coaches hit the wall with ManyChat?

Four places, in the order they usually show up.

### The success tax at scale

Growth raises the bill in steps you don't choose. On Essential's monthly billing, 250 contacts are included and each extra costs $0.10, so a Reel that sends 1,000 people through your trigger turns a $17 plan into a $92 month. The fix is usually a bigger plan, and the arithmetic in the worked example below shows the crossovers. The deeper issue is the meter itself: it counts reach, not results, and there's no cap to stop it.

### Flows can't hold a conversation

A keyword trigger can open a conversation, but it can't have one. When a lead replies to your lead magnet with "I've tried three programs like this, what's different about yours?", a flow matches words, not meaning, and sends whatever branch is closest. High-ticket coaching lives in exactly those messages. The [lead qualification questions](/blog/lead-qualification-questions-for-coaches) that separate a buyer from a browser, and the back-and-forth of [the price conversation](/blog/the-price-conversation-in-dms), don't fit inside a decision tree someone drew in advance.

### Template rigidity

Templates get you launched fast and then quietly shape your funnel to look like everyone else's. The scripts are generic by design, and every coach in your niche has access to the same ones, so leads see the same "Thanks for reaching out! 🎉 Grab your free guide here" cadence from five different accounts in a week. Making a flow sound like you takes real rewriting, and the flow still can't leave its rails when a lead does.

### The AI isn't a setter

Manychat AI exists, requires a paid plan, and ManyChat's own documentation labels it as being in beta. It covers AI Steps for handling queries, Intention Recognition, a Flow Builder Assistant, and a Text Improver, with newer AI Replies, Comments, and Goals running on Instagram only. That's useful assistance inside flows. It's a long way from an AI that qualifies a lead, handles an objection, and books the call, and ManyChat doesn't claim otherwise.

## ManyChat pros and cons

**Pros**

- Best-in-class flow builder and reliable comment-to-DM triggers
- Seven channels, including TikTok and Telegram, which most rivals skip
- Free plan and 14-day trials, so testing costs nothing
- Huge template library, tutorial base, and agency network
- Proven at volume, with 25,000 included contacts on the top tier
- Published pricing and honest, detailed help documentation

**Cons**

- Active Contact billing spikes in launch months, with no payment cap
- Pricing page leads with annual rates; month-to-month costs 20-43% more
- Flows execute scripts and can't handle off-script sales questions
- Manychat AI is in beta and assists flows rather than carrying conversations
- WhatsApp, SMS, and email locked behind Pro and above
- Free plan's 25 contacts make it a demo, not a working setup

## ManyChat review verdict: 3.9 out of 5

**★★★★☆ 3.9/5.** ManyChat is an excellent tool being asked, by a lot of coaches, to do a job it wasn't built for. Scored on the rubric from our methodology section:

| Criterion | Score /5 |
| --- | --- |
| Flow builder and comment-to-DM | 5.0 |
| Channel coverage | 4.5 |
| Templates, docs, and ease of setup | 4.5 |
| Pricing predictability | 3.0 |
| Sales-conversation depth | 2.5 |
| **Overall (equal weights)** | **3.9** |

The first three scores are why ManyChat has the market position it has, and we don't think any honest reviewer scores them much lower. Pricing predictability loses points for the uncapped overage model and the annual-rate framing on the pricing page, both documented on ManyChat's own pages. Sales-conversation depth is the score our bias touches most, so weight it yourself: if your DMs are links and lead magnets, ignore it entirely. If your revenue depends on [closing clients in the DMs](/blog/how-to-close-clients-in-dms), it's the score that matters most.

## Who should buy ManyChat?

More people than a competitor's review usually admits.

**Buy ManyChat if your funnel runs on capture.** Comment-to-DM, story-reply triggers, giveaway mechanics, and lead-magnet delivery are ManyChat's home turf, and at $17 to $39 a month it's cheap for what it does. A coach posting daily Reels with a keyword CTA gets more from ManyChat than from any tool we know at the price, including ours.

**Buy it if you broadcast.** Re-engagement pushes to a list of past leads are built in and well documented.

**Buy it if you're on TikTok or Telegram.** Almost nobody else automates those channels, and ManyChat covers both, Telegram on every plan.

**Buy it if you sell something people don't negotiate.** A $27 e-book, a $97 challenge, an order-status question: scripted flows close scripted purchases fine. The wall only appears when the purchase needs a conversation.

## Who shouldn't buy ManyChat?

**Skip it if the DM is your sales call.** A coach selling $2,000 to $10,000 programs closes in conversation: messy questions, objections, follow-up over days. Flows route those leads to a booking link at best and answer them wrongly at worst. What that kind of coach needs is closer to [what an AI DM setter is](/blog/what-is-an-ai-dm-setter) than to a flow builder, or simply a human answering.

**Skip it if a surprise bill genuinely hurts.** Uncapped per-contact overage plus a viral post equals a bill you didn't plan. If cash flow is tight, flat pricing is worth paying slightly more for.

**Skip it if you won't build.** ManyChat rewards people who invest setup hours. If you'll connect it, load a template, and never touch it again, the generic scripts will quietly cost you leads, and a lighter tool or a done-for-you setup fits better.

## What are the best ManyChat alternatives?

It depends on which wall you hit. If the problem is price at low volume, Instagram-only tools like Inrō and InstantDM run under $15 a month. If the problem is the conversation, you want a setter rather than a flow builder: our round-up of the [best AI DM setters](/blog/best-ai-dm-setter) compares that category honestly, including where each tool beats ours, and the [SetSmart vs ManyChat](/blog/setsmart-vs-manychat) comparison covers the cheapest conversation-first swap.

Luca, our product, sits in that second category: it reads each inbound message, drafts a reply in your voice, and queues it for your approval, with flat pricing from $99 a month. We'd rather you read the round-up than take one paragraph's word for it. And plenty of coaches shouldn't switch at all, which the next section shows with real numbers.

## A worked example: Dana's bill at three contact counts

Illustrative composite, not a real client. Dana is a strength coach selling a $3,000 twelve-week program, running comment-to-DM on Reels, on ManyChat Essential billed monthly at $17. Using ManyChat's published rates:

**Quiet month, 240 active contacts.** Inside Essential's 250 allowance. Bill: **$17**. ManyChat is close to free relative to one client.

**Good month, 1,000 active contacts.** One Reel performs. Essential covers 250, and the remaining 750 bill at $0.10 each, so $17 + $75 = **$92**. Pro billed monthly would have been $39 flat, since 1,000 sits inside its 2,500 allowance. Staying on the small plan cost her $53.

**Launch month, 4,000 active contacts.** On Essential: $17 + 3,750 x $0.10 = **$392**. On Pro: $39 + 1,500 x $0.05 = **$114**. On Business: **$99** flat. Same month, same funnel, a 4x spread depending on plan choice.

Two lessons. Size the plan for your best month, not your average one, because the overage rate on a small plan is punitive. And notice what the bill doesn't measure: of Dana's 4,000 contacts, the handful who asked "will this work with my shoulder injury?" got a scripted link. If two of those would have become $3,000 clients in a real conversation, the pricing problem was never the expensive one.

## Which edge cases should you plan for?

**The launch spike.** A post goes wide and thousands hit your trigger in a week. Every one is an Active Contact, the bill follows, and there's no cap to catch it. Watch the 70/90/100% alerts and move up a tier before the launch, not after the invoice.

**The closed messaging window.** Meta's Messenger Platform policy gives you 24 hours to reply to someone who messaged you, extendable to 7 days with the Human Agent tag. A lead who went quiet three weeks ago isn't reachable by automation, whatever your contact list implies. Build follow-up inside the window.

**The existing client.** A paying client comments your keyword, gets the cold-lead script, and counts toward your bill. Tag clients and route them around your funnels, both for the bill and because qualification questions aimed at someone who already paid you read as pure robot.

**Two tools on one account.** Running ManyChat alongside a setter or a second tool means both can receive the same message events. Split responsibilities by trigger, keywords to ManyChat and everything else to the other tool, or leads get two replies in the week you're trying to look sharp. Our breakdown of [whether ManyChat is safe](/blog/is-manychat-safe) covers the account-risk side of stacking automation.

## Troubleshooting: when ManyChat misbehaves

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bill is higher than the plan price | Per-contact overage past your Active Contact allowance | Check the usage meter, act on the 70/90/100% alerts, and upgrade the tier before your next launch |
| Automations stopped firing | Contact count far past the plan's cap, or Free plan limits reached | Upgrade the plan; on Free, wait for the monthly reset or move to Essential |
| Can't connect WhatsApp | Free and Essential don't include WhatsApp | Move to Pro or above and pick WhatsApp as one of your three channels |
| A real question gets a canned reply | Keyword triggers match words, not meaning | Add a default reply that routes unmatched messages to a human, and staff the Inbox |
| "Powered by Manychat" appears on your messages | Free plan watermark on first contact | Any paid plan removes it |
| Imported contacts can't be messaged | No open messaging window under Meta's rules | Wait for them to message first; importing a list doesn't reopen anyone's window |

## What mistakes do coaches make with ManyChat?

Five show up constantly, and the first two are about the bill.

**Sizing the plan on an average month.** The overage rate on a small plan is up to double the effective per-contact cost of the next tier up. Model your best month, pick the plan that survives it, and treat the difference as launch insurance.

**Reading the pricing page as month-to-month prices.** The headline figures are annual-billing rates. If you're paying monthly, budget $17/$39/$99/$199, and check which rate your card is actually being charged.

**Running production on the Free plan.** Twenty-five contacts is one good post. The Free plan exists to learn the builder, and the watermark on first contact tells every lead you're automating on the cheapest possible setup.

**Expecting Manychat AI to close.** It's in beta, by ManyChat's own label, and it assists flows. Coaches who hand it the sales conversation get generic answers at the exact moment specificity sells.

**Automating a script that didn't work manually.** If your DM sequence didn't book calls when you sent it by hand, ManyChat will now not-book-calls at scale. Fix the conversation first, then automate the parts that repeat.

## The decision criteria: buy, skip, or run both

**Buy ManyChat** if your DM volume is capture-shaped: keywords in, lead magnets out, broadcasts to a list, and a checkout link that closes without negotiation. Pick the tier whose allowance covers your best month.

**Skip it** if your inbox is conversation-shaped: high-ticket offers, real questions, price objections, and follow-up across days. A flow builder is the wrong species of tool for that inbox, however good this one is.

**Run both** if your funnel splits cleanly, and for many coaches it does. ManyChat fires the comment-to-DM trigger and delivers the magnet; a setter, human or AI, picks up every message that isn't a keyword. That pairing is common among coaches who moved, and it uses each tool exactly where it wins. The [complete guide to AI setters](/ai-setter) covers how the second half of that stack works.

## One honest limit

The fairest thing a ManyChat review written by a rival can admit: for its actual job, we don't know a better tool at the price, and swapping ManyChat for Luca one-for-one would leave a capture-heavy coach worse off. We don't do comment-to-DM triggers, giveaways, or broadcasts, and ManyChat does them extremely well.

The reverse limit is just as real. No flow, and no AI including ours, reads an emotionally invested, half-decided lead the way a great human closer does. Whatever tool you pick, keep yourself in the loop on the conversations that pay for everything else. If your inbox is small enough to answer every message personally within the hour, do that first and buy software later.

If the wall you've hit is the conversation rather than the capture, see what flat-rate setter pricing looks like on [Luca's pricing](/pricing) page.

## FAQ

### Is ManyChat worth it in 2026?

Yes, if the job is comment-to-DM capture, broadcasts, and flow automation. ManyChat is the most complete chat-marketing tool in its price range, from free to $199/mo. It's a weaker fit if your revenue depends on unscripted sales conversations, which flows can't carry.

### Is ManyChat still free?

Yes. The Free plan allows up to 25 Active Contacts per month, 4 live automations, 2 channels, and 1 user, with a "Powered by Manychat" watermark on first contact. WhatsApp, SMS, and email aren't included. It works as a demo, not as a production setup.

### How much does ManyChat cost per month?

On monthly billing: Essential $17, Pro $39, Business $99, Advanced $199. The prices ManyChat's pricing page leads with ($14, $29, $69, $139) are annual-billing rates. Every paid plan adds per-contact overage once you pass your included Active Contacts, and payments can't be capped.

### Does ManyChat work with Telegram?

Yes. Telegram is a supported channel on every plan, including Free, connected through a Telegram bot you create with BotFather. That surprises people who read older reviews, because Telegram support is easy to miss on the pricing page. TikTok, Instagram, and Messenger are supported too.

### What counts as an Active Contact in ManyChat?

A person who interacts with you through ManyChat during your billing month, whether through messages or automations. Each person counts once per month no matter how many messages you trade. Someone who comments a trigger keyword and never replies again still counts toward your allowance.

### Does ManyChat include AI?

Yes, on paid plans. Manychat AI covers AI Steps, Intention Recognition, a Flow Builder Assistant, and a Text Improver, and ManyChat labels it as being in beta. Newer AI Replies, Comments, and Goals run on Instagram only. It assists flows rather than carrying a sales conversation.

### Is ManyChat good for coaches selling high-ticket offers?

It's good at the top of a coach's funnel: capturing commenters, delivering lead magnets, and broadcasting. It's weak at the bottom, where a lead asks messy questions and negotiates price. Most high-ticket coaches pair it with a human or an AI setter for the conversation itself.
