---# How to Respond to Messages on Instagram From Leads

> Here's how to respond to messages on Instagram from a lead: open the chat, press and hold their message, and tap Reply. Then answer the exact thing they asked in one or two lines. Then ask one question that moves them toward a call. Reply while they're still on the app, keep each message short, and never paste a price list into the first reply.

## Key takeaways

- The mechanics are simple: press and hold a message, tap Reply, and your answer quotes theirs. The skill is in what you write.
- A good first reply answers their question, then asks one question back. It doesn't pitch, list prices or send a link.
- Check your message requests folder and hidden requests every day. Leads who don't follow you often land there.
- Tools that reply for you can only answer people who wrote first, and only inside a 24-hour window for most messages.

Knowing how to respond to messages on Instagram is the difference between a follower who chatted once and a client who booked a call. The buttons take a minute to learn, but the replies take practice, and this playbook covers both. It shows where lead DMs show up, how to reply in the app, what to write first, and how to restart a stalled conversation. It's written for coaches, but it works for anyone who sells through their DMs.

## How to respond to messages on Instagram: which taps do you need?

Open the chat, press and hold the message you want to answer, and tap Reply. Your message then quotes theirs, so the lead can see exactly what you're answering. That matters when someone sends three messages in a row and you want to answer the second one.

The full routine for a lead's DM takes five steps:

1. **Find the message.** Check your main inbox, message requests and hidden requests for the lead's DM.
2. **Reply to the specific message.** Press and hold the lead's message, then tap Reply so your answer quotes theirs.
3. **Answer what they asked.** Answer their exact question in one or two lines, without a price list or link.
4. **Ask one question back.** End with one easy question that moves the conversation toward a call.
5. **Check in if they go quiet.** If a lead stops replying after a real conversation, send one short check-in after about two days.

## Where do lead DMs show up on Instagram?

Most lead DMs land in your main inbox, but some go to message requests. A message from someone you aren't connected with arrives as a request, and Instagram limits it to text until you accept. Leads who found you through a reel or a search often fall into this group.

There's a second, easier-to-miss folder. Hidden Words is a setting that filters out words you'd rather not see. If you turn it on, Instagram moves requests with those words into a hidden requests folder. The text stays covered until you tap it, and Instagram says this filtering runs on your device. A real lead who uses a blunt word can end up there.

## What should your first reply to a lead say?

Your first reply to a lead should answer what they asked, then ask one question back. That's the whole formula. The answer shows you listened, and the question gives the conversation somewhere to go. That's usually toward their goal, a fit check or a time to talk.

Most coaches get the first reply wrong in one of two ways. Some send a wall of text: program details, price, testimonials and a link. Others reply "Thanks for reaching out, what can I help with?" when the lead already said what they wanted. Both make the lead do more work.

Here's the difference in practice:

| Lead's message | Weak reply | Strong reply |
| --- | --- | --- |
| "How much is coaching?" | "My 12-week program is $1,500, here's the link." | "Depends on what you need. Are you after a full program or a few check-ins to fix one thing?" |
| "Saw your reel about desk posture, do you work with people online?" | "Yes, here's my program." | "I do, all online. What's bothering you most right now, the back or the shoulders?" |
| "Is this for beginners?" | "Yes, everyone's welcome." | "Yes, most people start with no gym history. How often could you train right now?" |

For the next step after that first exchange, our guide on [how to turn a DM into a sales call](/blog/how-to-turn-a-dm-into-a-sales-call) walks through the full conversation.

## How fast should you respond to Instagram DMs from leads?

Respond to Instagram DMs from leads while they're still thinking about you, which in practice means minutes, not hours. A lead who DMs after watching a reel is often still in the app. By the next morning, they've seen forty other posts and may have forgotten why they wrote.

Speed matters more than polish for the first reply. A short, specific answer within ten minutes beats a perfect paragraph six hours later. Our guide on [DM response time and speed to lead](/blog/dm-response-time-speed-to-lead) covers what the research says about delays.

## What rules apply when a tool replies to Instagram DMs for you?

Any app that sends Instagram DMs for a business must follow Meta's messaging rules. A business can only message someone after that person has messaged its professional account first. For most messages, the business then has 24 hours to reply, so a tool can't open a conversation with a stranger.

Meta's developer documentation, checked October 2026, says of the reply window, "For most user actions, it lasts 24 hours." A lead who first messaged through a Click-to-Direct ad (an ad whose button opens a DM) opens a window of up to 7 days. Meta also requires automated chat experiences to disclose that the person is talking to an automated service where the law requires it.

So a tool gets one day to answer most messages, and it can never message someone first. Don't buy any tool that promises to DM people who never wrote to you. Our guide on [what Meta allows for DM automation](/blog/what-meta-allows-for-dm-automation) covers the rest of the policy.

## Four replies for the most common lead DMs

Four named replies cover most of what coaches get in their inbox: price questions, story reactions, keyword comments and quiet leads. Each one has when to use it and why it works. Change the wording to match how you actually write.

### 1. The Price Turn

> "Depends on what you need. Are you after a full program or a few check-ins to fix one thing?"

**When:** "How much?" as the first message. **Why it works:** a price with no context sounds expensive, and the question tells you which offer to quote. **If they push:** give a real range ("Programs run $900 to $1,500") and ask the same question again.

That doesn't mean hiding the price. If they ask twice, tell them, because dodging a direct question twice reads as a sales trick. Our guide to [the price conversation in DMs](/blog/the-price-conversation-in-dms) covers payment plans and the "that's too expensive" reply.

### 2. The Story Reaction Opener

> "Ha, glad that one landed. Are you dealing with the same thing?"

**When:** someone reacts to or replies to your story. **Why it works:** it treats the reaction as an opening and asks about them, not your offer. **If they push:** follow their lead. If they share a problem, ask one more question before mentioning coaching.

### 3. The Keyword Follow-Through

> "Here's the guide you asked for: [link]. Quick question while you read it: what made you comment on that post?"

**When:** someone comments a keyword to get a freebie and lands in your DMs. **Why it works:** it delivers what you promised, then starts a real conversation instead of ending at the link. **If they push:** if they only wanted the freebie, let them go politely.

### 4. The Two-Day Check-In

> "Hey, didn't want this to get buried. Still thinking about the program, or did the timing change?"

**When:** a lead stopped replying after a real conversation. **Why it works:** it gives them an easy yes or an easy no. **If they push:** if they say not now, ask when to check back and put it in your calendar.

Our [Instagram DM scripts to book calls](/blog/instagram-dm-scripts-to-book-calls) cover the rest of the conversation, from checking fit to the booking link.

## A worked example: one week of DMs

A week of lead DMs takes less time than most coaches expect, and the harder problem is when the messages arrive. Here's what replying looks like in numbers, using a fictional nutrition coach called Rosa (illustrative only). One reel brings in 40 DMs in a week. Twenty-five are real leads; the rest are friends, spam and "great video."

Each lead conversation runs about four messages before it ends in a call, a no, or silence. At about 90 seconds per message, that's 25 leads x 4 messages x 1.5 minutes, or 150 minutes of replying that week. That's about 21 minutes a day. But most of Rosa's DMs arrive between 8pm and 11pm, when she's off. If she replies the next morning, the lead has cooled. If she replies at 10pm every night, she's working seven evenings a week.

### Where does SetLuca fit?

SetLuca replies to leads who wrote to you first, within minutes at any hour, and paced like a person. It checks whether they're a good fit, handles common objections and books the call on your calendar. It learns the way you write from replies you paste in at setup and from your live conversations. Auto-send is on by default, and you can switch any channel to review if you want to read every reply first.

SetLuca also runs Telegram and Messenger in the same inbox as Instagram. If your leads write on more than one app, our [multi-channel DM playbook](/blog/multi-channel-dm-playbook) shows how to keep each conversation moving.

## Where does a human still beat SetLuca in your DMs?

One honest limit: a hard, emotional conversation is where a person still beats SetLuca. A lead who mentions an injury, a divorce or a bad past coach needs someone who can slow down and read what isn't said. SetLuca books the call, but the coach still closes.

SetLuca pins conversations about medical issues, crisis language, harassment, payment claims or legal threats to the top of your queue. A person sees them first.

## Should you reply to Instagram DMs yourself or use help?

Reply to Instagram DMs yourself if you get fewer than about ten lead DMs a week and you're usually free when they arrive. Doing it yourself teaches you what leads really ask, and that's worth the time. Get help once leads arrive at night, come in waves after a reel, or go cold before you can reply.

That help can be a human setter or SetLuca. Do both if you want a person on the hard conversations and replies within minutes on the rest. Our guide on [booking calls from Instagram DMs](/blog/book-calls-from-instagram-dms) shows how either setup ends in a booked call. Once the call is booked, our guide to [closing clients in DMs](/blog/how-to-close-clients-in-dms) covers what to say when the lead is ready to buy.

Knowing how to respond to messages on Instagram comes down to two habits: answer what they asked, and ask one question back. Do that quickly and consistently, and more of your DMs turn into conversations that end on your calendar.

## FAQ

### How do you reply to a specific message in an Instagram DM?

Press and hold the message you want to answer, then tap Reply. Instagram quotes their message above yours, so the lead can see exactly what you're responding to. It's useful when a lead sends several messages in a row and you want to answer one of them clearly.

### Why can't I see some DMs on Instagram?

They're probably in message requests or hidden requests. Messages from people you aren't connected with arrive as requests. If Hidden Words is on, requests with filtered words go to a hidden folder with the text covered. Check both folders daily so leads don't wait for days.

### How long do you have to reply to an Instagram DM?

A person can reply any time. A business tool sending through Meta's official messaging connection has 24 hours after the lead's last message for most replies. A lead who came through a Click-to-Direct ad opens a window of up to 7 days, and a reply tagged as from a human agent gets a separate 7-day window.

### Should I send my price in the first Instagram reply?

Usually not. A bare price with no context gets compared to cheaper options. Ask one question first, such as what they want to change, then quote the price that fits. If they ask for the price twice, tell them directly, because dodging it twice reads as a sales trick.

### Is it OK to use a tool to answer Instagram DMs?

Yes, as long as it follows Meta's rules: it only replies to people who messaged you first and stays inside Meta's messaging windows. Avoid any tool that sends DMs to people who never wrote to you. If a lead asks whether they're talking to AI, the answer should be honest.
